What Supplements Do I Need to Get Bigger as a Teenager?

Question: I need to know what supplements I need to use to get bigger. I used to be fat but I cleaned up what I eat and started running. Now I want bigger muscles so I’m working out. I used to take a pre-workout, a during workout drink and a post workout recovery shake but they stopped being effective so I need to know what I should be taking.

Answer: As a teenage male you’re growing at the fastest rate you’ll grow in your life.

What you need to concentrate on doing is:

  • to train with a purpose and with intensity.
  • Get the sleep you need every night because that’s when you grow.
  • Eat a balanced diet of healthy foods rich in protein for building muscle, carbohydrates for energy with some healthy fats which your body uses to produce hormones.

Now you’re making those hormones at an amazing rate.

The pre-workout drinks you have been using are designed to help you produce a “pump” which is a muscle engorged with blood. It provides the illusion of growth and it is an illusion and not a necessity for growth.

The during workout drink you’re using is usually a branched chain amino acid drink and it is good for assisting in recovery. Not a bad thing but not totally necessary.

The post workout drink is your protein. That is a good supplement to use since your body needs protein especially after training, not as much if you’re just working out. After you train, preferably within 45 minutes, when you drink whey protein your body is at a point that it will utilize the protein rapidly and whey isolate is easily digested and assimilated. This is the one you should definitely continue to use.

All this muscle you want to build requires vitamins and minerals to help in growth and rebuilding. A good vitamin/mineral supplement is recommended. You don’t need one of the megapaks with a variety of pills because you will pass a large portion of those pills out of your body with all the water you consume – and you should be consuming plenty of water.

You need calories for growth but follow the 80/20 rule and get healthy choices 80% of the time. Avoid the trap of eating anything just to get calories. All calories are not equal. You can easily eat and drink a number of calories without making them quality to assist in growth.

Train hard, sleep. eat a healthy meal plan and you’ll grow at an amazing rate. Don’t believe all the advertising you find in the magazines and on the Internet.
